I’m not fooling myself.  There are a handful of people that periodically come to this blog, maybe even read some of the entries from time to time, but I know what you are really looking to find.  You put up with my ramblings about my kiddos, maybe even enjoy the pictures a little bit, but what you’re really hoping to see is that Ken has posted a new video.

The truth doesn’t hurt my feelings.  I love the videos too, and I have enjoyed watching him over the past several months as he has been editing away on our vacation footage.  If you have been a guest in our house during this time, I’ve probably even forced you to watch them.  And if you haven’t, well, now it’s your turn.

For those of you who are new to the blog, or like my sweet husband, just can’t remember what you ate for breakfast, here’s a little reminder:

Last summer we borrowed my parents’ motor-home, loaded up the kids, and spent two weeks on a road trip across this beautiful country.  We started in our great state of Alabama and headed north through Tennessee until we hit our first stop:  Elizabethtown, KY, to see the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln.

From Abe’s house, we moved on through Kentucky, and finally pulled into the lovely town of Floyds Knobs, Indiana where we visited with some old friends for the night.  For my travel log and more info on our first stop, click here.

As for the vacation videos, to watch the video in it’s entirety is somewhat of a time commitment, so we have decide to post segments of the video every Monday over the next several weeks.  Here is the first installment.  Enjoy!

In order to get the full experience while you read our travel log entries, I want you to hum to yourself the old Willie Nelson song, “On the Road Again.”  I have declared this to be our theme song for the trip and insist on singing it every time our wheels start turning again.  Fortunately for my family, I only know about four lines of the song.  So it’s a short solo, but do I like to sing my version incorrectly and in my best impersonation of Christy Lane.  I know I am being obnoxious and that this really gets under Ken’s skin.  But when you are spending six hours a day in the car, any entertainment is good entertainment and helps pass the time.

So anyway…start humming now.

We left out on Monday morning which was actually a day earlier than we had originally planned.  We realized over the weekend that instead of talking about the vacation, we could actually be on the vacation.  So we packed up a little early and took off.

Our first destination was Elizabethtown, Kentucky where we visited the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln.  This stop was completely lost on Edie, but since it was our first, her enthusiasm was still strong.

Abe’s birthplace consists of a little log cabin built on top of a hill.  He definitely came from humble beginnings as the whole house wasn’t even as big as our bedroom.  Fortunately for tourists like us, Abe’s parents had the foresight to build this little cabin under a nice concrete structure to protect it from the elements, and it still has many of its original logs.  They even thought to place an informative plaque out front.

As turns out this cabin was sold to our government by a shyster some time ago.  As part of the New Deal, it was brought to Elizabethtown and declared a national park.  It was later found that although this was the birthplace of our sixteenth president, this was not the right cabin.

About ten miles away, we toured his boyhood home.  This landmark had a similar story where it was the right location with the wrong house.  It was still neat to see the little farm and picture a young, adolescent Abe playing in the creek before he went on to be one of our nation’s most famous presidents (you know, the future Barack Obama).

After our visit in Elizabethtown, we drove a short distance further north to spend some quality time with one of my dear friends from Auburn, Heather the OB/GYN.  It is very handy to have a friend that’s in this profession especially during your child bearing years, and I am incredibly proud of her.  She has worked crazy hard for those letters to follow her name, and I like to give her props when I can.

The last time I was able to visit Heather the OB/GYN was four years ago when I was pregnant with Edie, which meant it was before either of us had any kids.  We now have four between the two of us.  We all stood back and watched as our little girls instantly took a liking to each other and started a game of chase in their living room.

Our visit with Heather the OB/GYN and her family was short.  We were only able to spend the night with our friends which wasn’t even close to enough time to catch up.  But we had miles to go before our next stop, and so it was time to get on the road again…

You can stop humming now.
